One of the most gripping and well-written books I’ve read is The Proving Ground by G. Bruce Knecht. It’s about the disastrous events of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which were brought about by a powerful storm in the Bass Strait.

Bass Strait, Australia
When the Strait puts on such beautiful displays, it’s hard to believe that it can be so treacherous.

My top five picks from this week:
Gorgeous shot, BB.
We just watched “Noah” . . . so all that water makes me nervous. 😎
Mmmmm…I don’t think I’ll be watching that, Nancy.
Gosh, there are some goodies for this one !!!
How well I remember that time, bb …
A time of tragedy and terribly insensitive journalism, M-R. I remember someone asking one of the skippers how he felt that a crew member had died, when he was not aware of the death. What a moronic question, anyhow.
Wow, beautiful shot. Hard to equate it with images from that year. Never to be forgotten.
That event is imprinted on my mind. Thanks, MOSY.
We are heading across Bass Strait in November, hope it’s as peaceful as in your photo, maybe I’ll manage a lovely shot like yours.
I hope so, too, macmsue. Keep an eye on the weather reports, and take the gap. 🙂
Downright beautiful 🙂
Thanks, Laz 🙂

Stunningly beautiful, Bb! Out of this world really!
We were lucky to witness its beautiful calm, Adee. But not long after a hectic storm blew up. I wouldn’t want to be messing about on boats in this part of the ocean.
I don’t trust the ocean that’s for sure 😉 but I do love to look at water views like that – lovely photo bb.
It’s rather capricious, Gabe. As you say, nice to view its tempers and charms from solid ground. Thanks 🙂
that is so beautiful 🙂
Nature has her moments 🙂
Such a glorious place with immense dangers. I’m not a big fan of open water…
Me neither, Dianne. The open sea is an overwhelming place to be.
Stunning, BB – another world to an inlander
Thanks, Monica. Have you ever lived close to the sea?
Not too far when in college – but not close enough, either. The balmy caress of sea air wafting over the hills in between was palpable – I still miss it.
Just gorgeous. The sea can be so serene yet surge into a deadly demon.
